Bjorklunden Seminars Tackle Issues, Film, and Nature

From July 13 – 18, Lawrence University’s Björklunden is offering three seminars: “Israel and America” with Michael Desch, “Woods in the Morning, Wine in the Afternoon” with Nicholas Maravolo and “Nature in Film: Landscape As Character” with Campbell Scott.

“Israel and America” will explore the evolution of Israel’s place in America’s consciousness and look in depth at the various bases of the U.S.-Israel relationship.

“Woods in the Morning, Wine in the Afternoon” will involve field walks, plant identifications and stimulating discussions on nature. Afternoons will be spent discussing the scientific and cultural dimensions of wine while indulging in some delectable wine tasting sessions. Participants from previous summers are welcome to repeat this class.

“Nature in Film: Landscape As Character” participants will join Campbell Scott in an exploration of nature in world cinema. Watch a number of American and international features, including works by Kurosawa, Malick, Ballard, Roeg and Scott’s own Off the Map, and examine how writers, directors, and cinematographers attempt to capture the mystery and power of the natural world in order to tell their stories.

These seminars will take place at the Björklunden lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor. Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings with remaining free time open for exploration of the area’s many cultural and recreational opportunities or simple relaxation at Björklunden’s meadows, woods, and mile-long, unspoiled Lake Michigan shoreline. Each seminar includes meals prepared by Björklunden’s own resident chef, one of Door County’s finest.
