Bjorklunden Seminars

From July 27 until August 1, Lawrence University’s Björklunden will offer a myriad of seminars that will take place in their lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor.

“Women in Medieval Society,” presented by Jane Tibbetts Schulenburg, will explore a number of topics, all of them focusing in on the lives and roles of women during the Medieval period.

Schulenburg is the author of numerous studies on medieval women including her major work, Forgetful of Their Sex: Female Sanctity and Society, ca. 500–1100.

“Literature Meets the Law: From Oscar Wilde to J.R.R. Tolkien,” presented by Robert Spoo, will delve into how the law reacts when authors test the limits of social convention, and explore the many ways in which modern authors and their writings have encountered society’s legal strictures.

Spoo has published extensively on modern authors and the intersection of law and literature, including his latest book Without Copyrights: Piracy, Publishing and the Public Domain.

“A Fatal Triangle: Elijah, Jezebel and Ahab,” presented by Bill Urbrock and Merlaine Angwall, will look at the biblical account of the provocative encounters of the prophet Elijah with the Israelite king Ahab and his Phoenician queen Jezebel. This class will discuss their story in 1 Kings 16–19, related traditions in the Old and New Testaments, and selected later traditions about this “fatal triangle.”

Urbrock has taught seminars for the National Endowment for the Humanities and has presented a variety of courses, seminars and lecture series for educational and civic groups around Wisconsin and Door County.

Angwall works professionally as an actor and has appeared in various theatres, television commercials, film, and has directed for several theatre companies.

Seminar classes meet weekday mornings and some evenings at Björklunden’s lodge, just south of Baileys Harbor. For complete course descriptions, fees, and registration dates call 920.839.2216 or visit lawrence.edu/s/bjorklunden/bjorkseminars.
