Black & White Photography Featured at Base Camp

Base Camp & Ecology Sports will display a sampling of Matthew James Smith’s black & white photography beginning Oct. 12. Smith’s photographs offer a unique perspective of Door County’s physical character; mystery and beauty can be found in each image.

Dean Brierly, editor of B&W Magazine, says, “The enigmatic nature of Smith’s images is perfectly in tune with his photographic aesthetic – favoring an interpretive rather than literal approach. Smith’s Door County portfolio evoke the spatial characteristics of Stanley Kubrick’s famous forward-tracking shots, and produce a similar kind of corridor effect, leading the viewer towards some unseen destination or dimension. It’s a disquieting visual motif imbued with subtle and unspecified menace; we don’t know what’s hidden behind the door, or what lies beyond the curve in the road.”

Currently living in Ellison Bay, Smith received an education from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. His photographs have been well received from galleries and publications all over the country including National Geographic, The Center for Photographic Arts, and B&W Magazine.

Base Camp, open daily 7 am to 4 pm, is located in the lower level of Ecology Sports at 10904 Highway 42 in Sister Bay.
