Blacksmithing Classes to begin at Heritage Village

Try your hand at the rudiments of blacksmithing when the Door County Historical Society begins blacksmithing classes on May 19. The four-week long training will be on Tuesdays from 1 – 3 pm each day at the Blacksmith Shop in the Petersen Granary located at the Heritage Village at Big Creek in Sturgeon Bay.

Using a coal-fired forge, participants will learn how to read a fire, coal management, use of hammer, metal movement, proper tool names, and how to make an “S-hook” and a leaf; and will leave the class with pride in learning some skills of an 1800s traditional, vital trade. The Heritage Village will provide the forge, anvils, hand tools, materials, forge fuel, instruction and guidance.

Classes are limited in size and you are encouraged to register early. Subsequent classes will form depending on the public’s interest. Class fees for four, two-hour sessions are $150 for guests and $100 for Door County Historical Society members. Participants are limited to adults 18 and over and are required to sign a waiver. Students are required to wear wool or cotton apparel and eye protection. To register for classes call 920.431.2332.
