Blacktop Added to Fairground Midway

When the 2019 Door County Fair opens July 31, fairgoers will notice a major improvement to the fairgrounds in the form of a paved midway: The former gravel paths have been paved.

“This has been talked about for years, to try and improve the midway,” said county board Supervisor Dan Austad, who chairs the county’s Parks and Facilities Committee. “We’ve always heard through the years [that] one of the drawbacks is the gravel midway. If you were to have a car show, people didn’t want to bring their cars in because of the gravel.”

He also said the paving will make it easier for people in wheelchairs and those pushing strollers.

“They added some planters so it’s not just a blacktop strip. It makes it more attractive,” Austad said. “We’re always trying to come up with reasons, and we’re always looking for multiple uses for more than just the fair.”

The 2019 Door County Fair will run July 31 to Aug. 4.
