Blind Collaboration

The Hardy Gallery in Ephraim is seeking professional artists interested in participating in an exhibit based on the surrealist concept known as the “exquisite corpse,” to be on display from Sept. 4, 2015 to Oct. 13, 2015. Works must be delivered by Aug. 10, 2015.

The exhibit will feature works on paper including printmaking, drawing, pastel, painting, collage, etc. Artists will be given a template for one section of the human body: head to neck; neck to waist and upper part of arms; waist to upper part of legs and lower arms; or lower part of legs to feet. In the spirit of the Exquisite Corpse, artists may create any image as long as the transition marks are followed to provide continuity.

Printmakers are invited to participate in a portfolio exchange, and will be given specific instructions as to paper, size, bleeds, number in the edition, etc. There will be seven exquisite corpse figures comprised of four individual print sections per figure, for a total of 28 printmakers’ works exhibited.

The chance-based drawing game known as the Exquisite Corpse involved each participant creating a portion of a human figure without seeing what others had created, which resulted in fantastic distortions, juxtapositions and surreal composite figures.

As with the surrealist exercise, this exhibit will involve “blind collaboration” wherein artists will produce pieces that will be displayed together, without being able to see what others have produced.

Artists who create works on paper are encouraged to contact the Hardy for more information at 920.854.7100 or at [email protected].
