Blizzard Evelyn Over, but Many Door County Schools, Services Remain Closed Monday

While the snows of Blizzard Evelyn have eased up, many businesses and services in Door County remain closed Monday to allow crews to clear roads and businesses to shovel out. The blizzard dropped more than 20 inches of snow throughout much of northeast Wisconsin and now ranks as one of the largest ever recorded in the area.

Door County Highway Commissioner John Kolodziej said this morning that as of 6 am state highways in Door County are in fair condition. They are all plowed, but snow covered and slippery.

He said that about 80 percent of County roads have been plowed and are also in fair condition. They are also snow covered and slippery.

About 20 percent of town roads have been plowed. Town roads are in very poor condition, with some still impassable.

School parking lots will be cleared later today.

“Please stay off side roads if they have not been opened up by plow equipment,” Kolodziej said.

Closings and Cancellations

Southern Door, Gibraltar, Sturgeon Bay, Sevastopol, Algoma, Luxemburg-Casco, and Kewaunee schools are all canceled Monday. Washington Island is operating on a two-hour delay.

Classes at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College are cancelled. Northern Door Children’s Center is closed. The Montessori-based 4K program information session scheduled for Monday at Sturgeon Bay school has been cancelled. It is tentatively rescheduled for April 23 at 5:30 pm.

All non-essential services for Door County Government will be closed Monday, April 16.  “While some roads have been cleared, the additional forecasted snow and wind will make conditions unsafe,” said County Administrator Ken Pabich. “By remaining closed, the County plows can focus on clearing the streets and roads for the general public. While non-essential operations are closed, the Government Center will be open and we may still conduct our scheduled committee meetings.”

Kewaunee County government offices will also be closed.

The Barker Child Development Center at the Door County YMCA will be closed all day Monday, and all classes at the Northern Door and Sturgeon Bay program centers are canceled. However, both program centers are scheduled to be open at 9 am.

Earth Week Door County announced that its programs scheduled for Monday are canceled. That includes a showing of the documentary The Messenger at the Door County Community Center Monday morning, and the Green Door Legacy Roundtable Lecture at the Sevastopol Town Hall Monday evening.

Wednesday’s Run the Door Kickoff Fun Run has been postponed and rescheduled for  6 pm on Wednesday, April 25. The free, non-competitive event, sponsored by the Door County Silent Sports Alliance, will start and finish at Door County Fire Company.

WPS Urges Residents to Check for Ice Buildup

Wisconsin Public Service is urging customers to check energy meters and appliance vents for any accumulating ice and snow. A buildup of ice can damage a meter, while ice and snow can block natural appliance vents, trapping carbon monoxide indoors.
