Board Approves Rooftop Deck for Sonny’s

Plans by Sonny’s Italian Kitchen & Pizzeria at 129 N. Madison Ave. to remove the existing roof on the tiki bar and replace it with a flat rooftop for a deck were approved Monday by Sturgeon Bay’s Aesthetic Design & Site Plan Review Board.

The plans call for the new deck to be placed on the current 18-foot-by-27-foot (486 square feet) roof footprint.

City planner/zoning administrator Stephanie Servia said the rooftop deck was brought before the board for approval because it represents a moderate change to Sonny’s aesthetics. She said the rooftop deck, which meets the required waterfront-project setback of 25 feet from the bulkhead line, will match the building’s architecture.

Jason Estes of Sonny’s said he plans to use hanging LED lights for the rooftop deck, where drinks will be served while bands perform, with access to the deck from existing aluminum steps. He also said the deck will have a galvanized railing with stainless-steel cable to match the roof.
