Bond Set for Suspect in Sturgeon Bay Cold Case

At an initial court appearance Nov. 2, Door County Circuit Court Judge D. Todd Ehlers set bond at $1 million for Richard G. Pierce, 82, of Cheboygan, Mich., who was arrested last month in the suspected murder of his wife, Carol Pierce, who was last seen in Sturgeon Bay in September 1975. At a second hearing Nov. 6, Pierce’s attorney asked for a signature bond, but instead Judge Ehlers reduced the bond amount to $500,000. Pierce was a member of the U.S. Coast Guard and stationed in Sturgeon Bay in 1975 when 35-year-old Carol disappeared. Pierce maintained that she had left him. The Wisconsin Cold Case Team of the Wisconsin Association of Homicide Investigators helped in moving this cold case forward. Pierce was arrested at his home in Cheboygan on Oct. 11. Authorities searched his property for remains but have not reported any results. Pierce faces charges of first degree murder and disinterment of the dead. His next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 3.
