Boys Baseball: Clippers Sweep Pioneers

Sturgeon Bay’s baseball team won both games of Monday’s Packerland Conference doubleheader at Memorial Field.

The Clippers defeated the Pioneers in the first game, 10-8.

Sevastopol outhit Sturgeon Bay, 10-5, with five players getting two apiece, including a pair of doubles from Drake Olsen. Curt Meyer led the Clippers at the plate with two hits.

Seven of Sevatopol’s hits came off of Sturgeon Bay starter Ian Fruzyna, who gave up three runs working the first four innings.

Sturgeon Bay led 10-3 before the Pioneers scored five runs in the fifth inning off of Meyer. Garrett Ulberg retired the final seven batters to close out the victory for Sturgeon Bay.

Sevastopol’s pitchers walked 11 batters. Starter Chase Haberli gave up eight runs on five hits with six walks and a hit batter while striking out four. Oliver Mathews pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs with five walks and a strikeout.

The Clippers did all the scoring in game two, shutting out the Pioneers in five innings, 13-0.

Of Sturgeon Bay’s 12 hits, Meyer and Caleb Plzak had three apiece. Bryce Plzak and Danny Lodl each added two hits.

Harry Schartner accounted for two of Sevastopol’s five hits.

The Clippers’ season record stands at 9-5 in the Packerland and 13-10 overall going into Friday’s league doubleheader at Kewaunee.
