Boys & Girls Club Unveils Many Upgrades on ‘Day for Kids’ Sept. 1

On Thursday, Sept. 1, 4 – 6 pm, the doors of the expanded David G Hatch Center at 55 South Third Avenue will open wide in a celebration of new capabilities to serve our youth. This Open House gives the community and Club families the opportunity to learn about 2016-17 school year programs. There are exciting changes at the Hatch Center as the Boys & Girls Club of Door County (BGCDC) takes over all three floors of the former Baudhuin Engineering building and the Club’s new commercial kitchen set to be complete later this fall.  BGCDC purchased the building in 2014 but leased space back to the engineering firm until recently

Executive Director Julie Davis explained the importance of this step. “Now, rather than being at Sawyer School with 1st and 2nd graders, our youngest members have a brand new kindergarten space on the second floor at Hatch Center.  There are spaces set aside for programs by community partners.  One particularly important new asset is the commercial kitchen, positioning the Club to address food insecurity issues faced by some children.”

Programming for after school runs from 3 to 7 pm every week day. BGCDC serves students from the Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door, Sevastopol, and parochial school districts. Cost for a Club membership is only $10 per child for nine months. BGCDC activities focus on three primary outcomes: academic achievement, healthy lifestyles, and character and citizenship.

The Boys & Girls Club’s mission is to inspire all young people to reach their full potential as caring, responsible, and productive citizens. The Club operates with the objective of serving all Door County youth, regardless of the circumstances they may face – ensuring that nearly 500 boys and girls have a safe and nurturing environment to develop socially, succeed in school, stay physically active and prepare for great futures.
