Brooke Strege tops Algoma CC Meet

Brooke Strege recorded her second first-place finish of the season in cross country Sept. 6 at Algoma.

The Southern Door senior completed the 5,000-meter course at Peterson Park in 21 minutes, 55 seconds – 27 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Shawano’s Lilly Guenther.

The Eagles and two other Door County schools, Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol, were part-of the multi-team meet, with three other girls from the county’s schools finishing in the top 10 including Sturgeon Bay’s Julia Kurek (fourth in 24:30), Southern Door’s Emma Bousley (fifth in 24:41) and Sevastopol’s Jolene Luedtke (eighth in 25:01).

Shawano (27) topped the girls team standings, with Sturgeon Bay (70), Sevastopol (103), Southern Door (106) and Denmark (116) rounding out the top five.

In the boys race, Southern Door’s Ben Grota placed third in 19:02 as the only runner from a county school to finish in the top 10. His time was more than a minute and a half off the winning pace of Shawano’s Ethan Onesti.

Two other runners from county schools to crack the top 20 included Southern Door’s Lucas Conard (13th in 21:26) and Sevastopol’s Jairus Dadam (20th in 22:32).

Southern Door (105) placed fourth in the boys standings, with the top-three teams including Shawano (24), Northeast Wisconsin Christian Homeschool Athletic Association (55) and Oconto (90).
