Budelman Paper Art Exhibited at The Peninsula Bookman

The Peninsula Bookman of Fish Creek is proud to announce its first ever fine art exhibit with Old Paper: New Works in Collage featuring the assemblage of William Budelman. The exhibit opens with a reception at 7 pm on Friday, August 21. The work will remain on display through September 4.

Budelman’s collages are constructed of old letters, ticket stubs, clippings from books, and other scraps of paper combined with the occasional found object, bit of thread, or dried flower. Each piece seems to freeze a brief sliver of time, captured through bits of what would ordinarily be discarded bits of paper ephemera and other detritus of daily life.

Formally trained as a printmaker, Budelman’s work in collage began as a visual journal, which he used to develop concepts for prints. Many of his early pieces were assembled in the pages of his blank book, and were simply titled with the time and place where they were completed. This old snapshot quality of the compositions engenders a sense of nostalgia in the work, and does so while remaining light-hearted and sometimes playful. At other times the work is introspective and meditative.

Budelman has been involved in the Milwaukee visual arts community since he was a student at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design in the1980s, and was once called one of the 20 most influential young artists in Milwaukee.

The Peninsula Bookman is a new, used, and rare bookstore located at 4083 Main Street in Fish Creek. This exhibit is hoped to be the beginning of a series of shows focused on book and paper arts. For more information, please phone 920.868.1467 or visit http://www.doorcountybookstore.com.
