BUG Fire Department Brings in $198,895

The Brussels-Union-Gardner (BUG) Fire Department has received a FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant in the amount of $198,895.24.

The funds will be used to replace all self-contained breathing apparatuses, including air bottles and custom-fit face masks at both BUG fire stations. The current equipment is 20 years old and no longer complies with current safety standards.

Since 2003, the BUG firefighters have held fundraisers, worked with community partners to raise money, received equipment donations through these relationships, and applied for and been awarded many grants. Fire Chief Curt Vandertie and Captain Pat O’Hern led this application project.

These combined efforts have raised more than $736,000 in funds and equipment, all of which go directly to the BUG Fire Department. They have allowed operating budgets – where the financial burden would fall otherwise – to be some of the lowest in the area while maintaining one of the highest levels of service.
