Building a LEED-Platinum Home in Gills Rock

David George and Laurie Zelon are constructing what is expected to be Wisconsin’s newest LEED-Platinum home on Northport Ridge Road in Gills Rock.

LEED is the rating system designed by the U.S. Green Building Council to measure Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is considered to be one of the most stringent building rating systems in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Platinum is the highest level of attainment in the four-tier rating system that considers the site selection, landscaping, building design, construction technology, energy efficiency and environmentally sustainable materials selections.

The home was designed by architect Virge Temme of Sturgeon Bay and is being built by Bay Lakes Builders of Green Bay and Fish Creek. This very unique contemporary design mimics the rolling hills of Northern Door, paying homage to the rural history of the county. The 2,500 square foot home provides passive solar heat, is super-insulated with 12” thick walls, and will require no furnace or boiler system.

Wisconsin builds nearly 20,000 new homes per year, and of those only about four per year become LEED-certified. There is only one other Platinum-rated LEED home in the state. The building progress can be viewed at http://www.virgetemme.com, and the home will be open to the public upon completion.
