Building Sculptures in the Sand

If you can’t build castles in the sky, you can certainly build them on the beach in Door County. On Saturday July 31, join the sand sculpting fun at Whitefish Dunes State Park. Now in its 10th year, the contest has been gaining in popularity. Last year 120 people participated, with many more attending to view the sculptures.

Naturalist Carolyn Rock said, “Visitors love to see the different sculptures created each year. The sculptors sometimes come prior to the contest day and practice building.”

Park visitors and onlookers are encouraged to vote for their favorite sculpture, which will culminate in the People’s Choice Award.

This year, there are three categories in the sculpture contest: buildings, natural objects and unusual things. Bring your family and friends to this all-ages event. Rock said some folks make it a team effort and work together to design and create a sculpture.

Registration is from 11 am – 2 pm. Judging will take place starting at 2 pm. The criteria judges are looking for in each sand sculpture are theme, time and effort shown, creativity and imagination, and how the structure has been engineered.

“The event was created to bring families and friends together while enjoying being outdoors. Some sculptors are into winning a prize but others are more laid back and enjoy the time at the park.”

Awards will be announced at 3 pm. Every one who participates in the contest receives a price. For more information or to view the rules, call 920.823.2400, or visit http://www.dnr.state.wi.us/org/land/parks/regions/ner/whitefish.html.
