The Southern Door School District reports that a case of pertussis (whooping cough) has been identified in a student at the school. Pertussis is a highly contagious illness that affects the respiratory tract.

Parents are asked to watch their children for any symptoms of pertussis (mild, cold-like symptoms) in the next several weeks. In infants and young children, the disease begins much like a cold with a runny nose, possible low-grade fever and a mild but irritating cough. The illness progresses to spells of explosive coughing that can interrupt breathing, eating and sleeping and is commonly followed by vomiting and exhaustion.

If you notice the symptoms, notify your child’s physician as well as the Southern Door County School District as soon as possible.

The Door County Health Department offers Tdap, the pertussis booster, to all members of the community free of charge. The contact number to make an appointment is 920.746.2234.
