WHAT HAPPENED

• During the past several weeks, the Door County Sheriff’s Department and the Sturgeon Bay Police Department have received numerous complaints of storage sheds broken into and property taken. The Door Co. Sheriff’s Dept. received information about the burglaries and possible suspects. Search warrants were executed in Green Bay and many items believed to be stolen were recovered. The suspects mainly targeted tools, camping equipment, athletic equipment, and other items.

The Door Co. Sheriff’s Department asks residents who rent storage sheds in the city and county to check their property and sheds. The suspects would break into the sheds, take items and replace the locks with ones they brought with them. If you are the victim of a burglary, please contact the Door County Sheriff’s Dept. or the Sturgeon Bay Police Dept. to make a police report. Be as detailed as possible when describing stolen items so that the items can be returned to you if found.

Suspects in this matter may have left the Door County area. The Door Co. Sheriff’s Dept. is looking for two male suspects:  Ricky L. Smithey, male, white, DOB: 11-05-88, brown hair, brown eyes, 5’05”, 140 lbs.; and William G. Collman, male, white, DOB: 05-09-69, brown hair with gray beard, brown eyes, 5’08”, 180 lbs. Both are originally from Kentucky. It’s unknown what type vehicle they may be driving.

This investigation is in its early stages and on-going. It is anticipated that there will be criminal charges in the future.

• The Sturgeon Bay Police Department started its citizens academy last week. The academy will run for three consecutive weeks, every Tuesday of the week. During the academy citizens will be trained on numerous law enforcement topics and will have the ability to interact with officers. If you are interested in joining future citizens academies, please contact Chief Arleigh Porter at 920.746.2450.

• Emerald Ash Borer has been confirmed in the City of Arcadia in Trempealeau County. EAB has also been found in the city of Rhinelander, the first time it has been found in Oneida County; and in the Village of Sherwood, the first find in Calumet County. Those counties were already under quarantine because of their proximity to quarantined counties. Door County was placed under quarantine in June.

• The Peninsula Symphonic Band will present a free Veterans Day concert at 3 pm on Sunday, Nov. 2, at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1756 Michigan St., Sturgeon Bay. Free will offerings will be accepted to benefit the Door County Veterans Service Council.

• State Representative Garey Bies (R-Sister Bay) says Family Care for Northeast Wisconsin will move forward. The Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) is expected to approve the contracts to administer the program at its next meeting being planned for November. “The people of northeast Wisconsin have patiently waited for this program to expand to our area,” Bies said. “Contrary to what some are saying, enrollment for the program will begin in early 2015….The expansion of the program is overwhelmingly supported by members of the legislature and Governor Walker and it will move forward at the next scheduled meeting.” The program currently operates in 57 of Wisconsin’s 72 counties and it allows the elderly and adults with developmental and physical disabilities to receive long term care in their own homes and communities. “It’s been a long journey to have Family Care available in our area. I greatly appreciate the efforts of all those who helped make the expansion a reality,” Bies said. “Thousands of our most vulnerable citizens will benefit significantly from the services provided under this program.”
