WHAT HAPPENED

• Acting on the advice of its insurance company, the Southern Door School District has made some traffic flow and parking lot improvements at the school. Now the handicapped parking is more clearly marked, there is a clear designation of the fire lane, and the parking spaces and parking flow in the circle lot in front of the elementary/middle school have been updated. The lot was restriped and expanded to include about 20 additional parking spaces. Please be aware the fire lane and inside lane by the handicapped parking are not to be used for parking. Enter the driveway by the east/right of the district office and exit by the west driveway keeping the flow of traffic going in one direction.

• On Aug. 28, a complainant reported to the Sturgeon Bay Police Dept. receiving a phone call from 954.746.9900. The caller claimed to be from Police Protective Fund and requested a donation. The Police Protective Fund is a scam and the caller might use a legitimate phone number from outside the area to disguise the phone call. If you receive these types of phone calls do not give out any personal information and hang up the phone. As always the Sturgeon Bay Police Department reminds everyone to never give out sensitive information such as credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, or banking information over the phone unless you are positive you know who you are talking to is legitimate. Never hesitate to contact police if you have questions or concerns over phone calls you are receiving

The Internal Revenue Service and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration continue to hear from taxpayers who have received unsolicited calls from individuals demanding payment while fraudulently claiming to be from the IRS. Based on the 90,000 complaints TIGTA has received through its telephone hotline to date, approximately 1,100 victims who have lost an estimated $5 million from these scams have been identified. “There are clear warning signs about these scams, which continue at high levels throughout the nation,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. “Taxpayers should remember their first contact with the IRS will not be a call from out of the blue, but through official correspondence sent through the mail. A big red flag for these scams are angry, threatening calls from people who say they are from the IRS and urging immediate payment. This is not how we operate. People should hang up immediately and contact TIGTA or the IRS.” For more information or to report a scam, go to irs.gov and type “scam” in the search box.
