WHAT HAPPENED

The Board of Directors of the Sturgeon Bay Visitor Center announced that they have hired Pam Seiler as the new executive director. Seiler will replace Todd Trimberger, who announced in late June that he wanted to focus his efforts on his business, Bliss. Trimberger stated, “Pam is a perfect person to pass the honor of this position on to. This is a planned transition and I am really excited about the new talents that Pam will bring to the community.” Board President Fred Young stated, “We had many great applicants to choose from. Pam is a very enthusiastic and talented individual who has already established relationships with the businesses and community leaders of Sturgeon Bay and we are excited to have her leading our team.”

Seiler was most recently the executive director of the Volunteer Center. In a statement, Seiler said, “During the past 29 years, Sturgeon Bay has been our home. We’ve chosen to live here, work here and raise our family here. I am passionate about our community and look forward to continuing the mission of making Sturgeon Bay a great place to live, work and play!”

• Dean DeBroux, Democratic candidate for Wisconsin’s 1st State Senate District, is proud to receive the endorsement of the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters. Their endorsement recognizes DeBroux’s strong commitment to Wisconsin’s traditions of conservation and sporting activities. Anne Sayers, program director for the Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters, offered this statement regarding their endorsement of DeBroux:  “Because of Dean’s strong support of Wisconsin’s air, water, land and sporting opportunities, he has been endorsed by Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters. Our endorsement demonstrates to voters that Dean is the candidate in this race who they can rely on to stand up for Wisconsin’s proud conservation traditions.”

After a two-month joint Internet Crimes Against Children Investigation with the Brown County Sheriffs Department, the Sturgeon Bay Police Department along with agents from the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation, a search warrant was executed on a Sturgeon Bay business and apartment on Sept. 5. Voyeuristic material – including hidden cameras, images and movies – were recovered at Untitled Used & Rare Books, 20 N. 3rd Ave., along with several hundred images of child pornography. Two Sturgeon Bay men were arrested – bookstore owner Steven Link, 37, and Kory Murphy, 26. At a hearing on Sept. 8, cash bond was set at $10,000 for Link and a $3,500 signature bond for Murphy.

COMING UP

Southern Door citizens are invited to a meeting of the “Yes for Southern Door Students” group on Saturday, September 13, at 9 am in the Southern Door High School library. The group will be communicating with community members about the need to pass the November 4 referendum. The one year, non-recurring referendum will ask voters to exceed the current revenue cap by $390,000 for the 2015-2016 school year for the purpose of maintaining current educational programming. For more information, contact coordinator Marilyn Fitzgerald-White at 920.825.7302.

• Door County officials have proposed to dredge the harbor and entrance channel at Chaudoir’s Dock County Park. The dredging will improve navigation and boat access to the harbor, located on the bay. A public meeting on the proposed disposal of the dredged material from the harbor will be held at 6 pm Thursday, Sept. 18, at Cherryland Airport, 3538 Park Drive, Sturgeon Bay. The county has asked DNR to modify the plan of operation for the closed Door County Landfill to allow disposal of approximately 4,000 cubic yards of dredged material on the landfill site. The dredged material would be temporarily stored on approximately one acre of land northeast of the landfill. The dredged material would then be used on the landfill to maintain proper drainage. The DNR has made a preliminary determination that the proposed action would not result in significant adverse environmental effects. The purpose of the meeting is to solicit public comment on the proposal. Written comments relating to this project can be sent to Greg Tilkens, hydrogeologist, Department of Natural Resources, Waste and Materials Management Program, 2984 Shawano Ave., Green Bay WI 54307. Comments must be received no later than Wednesday, Sept. 17.

• Local businesses are invited to learn more about the reconstruction plans for a proposed highway project on Hwy 42/57 between Michigan Street and Egg Harbor Road. Formal presentations will be given at 10 am and 1 pm on Tuesday, Sept. 16, in the auditorium at Sturgeon Bay High School (enter though the back entrance of the school). There will also be a public involvement meeting from 5 to 7 pm that same day with a formal presentation at 5:15 pm. The proposed improvements include construction of roundabouts at the Michigan Street and Egg Harbor intersections; reconstruction of the Alabama Street intersection to add left turn lanes for Hwy 42/57 and prevent straight through and left turns from the side road; reconstruction of the corridor between the intersections.
