• A free tax preparation service sponsored by AARP and the IRS is offering two locations in northern Door County: the Town Hall in Baileys Harbor on Mondays and Scandia Village in Sister Bay on Wednesdays. • Polly Kuehn CPA, CMCA, of Bay Property Services in Fish Creek recently earned the Association Management Specialist (AMS) designation from Community Associations Institute (CAI).

Kuehn is co-owner of Bay Property Services, which manages all aspects of over 25 community associations in Door County and can be visited on the Web at http://www.baypropertyservices.com.

To earn the AMS designation, managers must have at least two years of experience in community association management and complete advanced course work. In addition, they must have already earned the basic industry certification for managers – the Certified Manager of Community Associations credential.

Van’s Lumber & Custom Builder Inc. is pleased to announce that they have been retained to completely renovate the historic C&C Supper Club located on the corner of Highway 42 and Main Street in Fish Creek. Purchased by Bob and Noreen Pullman in November of 2009, the updated and expanded club is scheduled to reopen in May of 2010 under the name Cooper’s Corner.

Van’s is fully renovating the large, 120-person indoor dining area, adding an outdoor patio with seating for approximately 130 diners and building a retail wine shop which will be located on the same property.

Greens N Grains Natural Food Store has launched a series of classes designed to introduce students to healthy natural eating, food analysis, and planting.

“We plan to explore everything along a path that leads to better health, from the grocer’s shelves out to the garden,” said Greens N Grains founder Kathy Navis.

The first class, “Sprouting 101 – The basics of sprouting seeds and grains for nutritional purposes,” taught by Cindy Knigge will be offered Feb. 11, 2 – 3:30 pm
. Covering the basics on how to sprout organic beans, grains and seeds, the class will cost $10.

The second class taught by Linda Cockburn on Feb. 25, 2 – 3:30 pm, will be “Starting Garden Plants from Seed.” Cockburn will teach students how to get a jump on the growing season by doing what the greenhouses do at home. The class will cost $5.

• The Door County Home Builders Association (DCHBA) is seeking exhibitors for the 2010 Door County Home & Garden Expo on March 26 and 27 at the Stone Harbor Resort and Conference Center in Sturgeon Bay.

“The Expo is a great opportunity for diverse businesses – from builders and designers to landscapers and banks – to attend and meet prospects in person who are interested in remodeling and building,” said Ethan Jorns of WE Builders, Inc. and Home & Garden Expo co-chairman.

Organizations exhibiting reach about 450 people who attend the expo. Exhibitors do not have to be DCHBA members to participate.

• The Door County Economic Development Corporation (DCEDC) is soliciting nominations for the annual Door County Industry of the Year Award and the Door County Entrepreneur of the Year Award. The awards celebrate businesses that help to create a positive business climate in Door County and will be announced at DCEDC’s Annual Meeting this spring.

The Industry of the Year award recognizes a construction, service or manufacturing business that has made a substantial impact on the community and enjoyed significant accomplishments during the past year. Selection criteria include the firm’s stability within the marketplace, growth through job creation and capital investment, innovations in technology and/or business processes, leadership within the industry and business community and corporate citizenship, including involvement in community affairs and development.

The Entrepreneur of the Year Award celebrates individuals who have taken the initiative to start and grow a successful small business in Door County. Eligible businesses include those with fewer than 50 employees that exhibit recent growth and future potential through job creation, innovation and/or investment in the business, have at least three years of successful business experience and demonstrated civic and community involvement.
