Last week’s trivia question:

The U.S. Open Championship is now underway at Pebble Beach Golf Links. The 1985 U.S. Open is less remembered by who won it – Wisconsin native, Andy North – than who lost it, T. C. Chen. What did Chen do on Sunday on hole number five that led him to a quadruple bogey and perhaps ultimately losing the tournament to North by one stroke.

Answer: Chen double hit the ball.

A double hit is when the ball is hit twice in one swing, incurring a one-stroke penalty. Chen had a four stroke lead heading into hole number five on the final day of the U.S. Open, when the fateful penalty occurred on his chip shot out of the rough. Chen then three putted for an 8 and proceeded to bogey the next three holes. He was remembered for maintaining his grace under the pressure of one of the most memorable U.S. Open meltdowns in history. An expression was born that day that is still used today – to “T.C. Chen” the ball means to double hit it.

Winner of a sleeve of Titleist golf balls: Duane Lardinois from Sturgeon Bay. Congratulations!

(Several people e-mailed the correct answer, but Duane was randomly selected from all those with the correct answer. Thanks to all for participating).
