Campground Altercation Results in Two Wounded, Two Charged

Two men were charged with felony battery following a July 4 altercation at a group campground on Washington Island.

Artur Buts, 31, and Roman Malychkovych, 31, both from Chicago, were each taken into custody and charged with felony substantial battery with intentional bodily harm. Malychkovych was also charged with disorderly conduct.

Door County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Pat McCarty said it was close to 5 pm on July 4 when the call came in about an incident at a group campsite where about 50 people were camping together. The two victims were transported to the hospital for “relatively minor wounds,” McCarty said. One sustained a stab wound, the other an injury from being punched.

The Washington Island Police Department was the first to arrive on the scene. The Door County Sheriff’s Office sent a deputy to the island and also assisted with follow-up interviews at the hospital.

Buts and Malychkovych made their initial appearances in Door County District Court on Monday morning and were released after each posted a $500 cash bond.
