Cana Island Restoration Bid Trims Costs

Contractors for Phase II of the Cana Island restoration were able, at the Door County Board of Supervisors’ recommendation when the bid went higher than expected, to trim $46,500 from costs. Door County Parks Director Erik Aleson reported to the Airport & Parks Committee July 12 that with the scaled-back project, the total cost for Phase II is now at $382,070. The county board learned at its June meeting that the bid had come in at $415,000, while only $360,000 had been committed to that phase of the project. The county kicked in $200,000 from receipts from visitors to Cana Island for this phase, with the rest coming from the Door County Maritime Museum, the county’s partner in running Cana Island. Museum Executive Director Amy Paul said the organization is about $68,000 short of their amount, which they hope to raise from donors. The county agreed to use more of the Cana Island fund money to cover the museum’s shortfall, with the understanding that the museum will repay the money. It is an arrangement the county and museum have conducted in the past.
