Candlelight Ski Tradition Continues at Newport State Park

Newport State Park will hold its 26th annual candlelight ski/hike/snowshoe event on Feb. 13, 5:30 – 8:30 pm.

Twenty-six years ago Newport State Park began the candlelight ski tradition in Door County, and it also allows hiking and snowshoeing during the event. The tradition will carry on again this year as a portion of the trail will come alive by candlelight, guiding skiers, hikers and snowshoers into a glowing, magical winter wonderland.

Park staff and volunteers will place more than 300 candles, guiding participants down a one-mile wooded trail section. Candlelight skiing requires no special talent or technique, and the terrain of the trail is flat and suited to the beginning skier as well as the experienced.

Participants can start at the picnic area parking lot anytime between 5:30 and 8:30 pm. A bonfire, fireplace and refreshments will be awaiting participants at the shelter building. Grills will be lit and available for anyone who wishes to bring along the makings for a picnic supper or marshmallow roast. Participants may also want to bring a small flashlight.

A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker will be required. For more information call 920.854.2500. If interested in volunteering for the event, call the park office prior to the event. The candlelight ski/hike/snowshoe event will be held with or without adequate skiing snow. Only extreme (cold) temperatures or unsafe trail conditions would cancel the event.
