Carnegie Hall Quality Returns to Door County

One of the world’s finest musical ensembles returns to Door County to perform three masterpieces on Sept. 27 at the Ephraim Moravian Church. The highly acclaimed Pro Arte String Quartet will present masterworks by Haydn, Schubert, and Dvorak.

Originating in Belgium one hundred years ago, the Pro Arte is the world’s longest continuing quartet and is currently celebrating its centenary anniversary. In 1940, the ensemble emigrated to the U.S. and became the first quartet in residence at a major university with its appointment to the faculty of the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

For the Ephraim concert, the quartet has chosen three mainstream classics, including Haydn’s Quartet in D Minor, Opus 103. Haydn was unable to complete the work before his death, but the two completed movements demonstrate the extraordinary creativity of a genius in his twilight years.

Dvorak’s Quartet in G Major, Opus 106 is also an autumnal work. The slow movement of the quartet is regarded as one of the greatest in quartet literature.

Between these two works is a quartet by the 19 year-old Schubert. It was written in 1816, the same year as his Fifth Symphony and one of his most famous songs, “Die Erlkِnig.”

The concert begins at 7:30 pm and includes a post concert reception. Tickets are $25 per person (children under 17 are free).

This concert is presented by Midsummer’s Music. For more information or reservations, call 920.854.7088 or visit http://www.midsummersmusic.com.
