  • Letter to the Editor: Draining the Swamp

In recent years, we’ve heard the expression “draining the swamp” a great deal in regard to politics in this country. The definition varies dramatically depending on which party is using it.   To Democrats, it refers to eliminating the outsized control that money from corporations and billionaires exert on political decisions. It’s kind of hard to […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Together We Can Become an Army

As the people went about their daily lives in the town of Brumadinho, they were completely unaware that the massive tailings dam at the mine was getting weaker every day. Then maybe just a small section started to fail, just a little. Then a little more gave way on the massive wall. That wall held […]

  • Letter to the Editor: All Must Participate in Reversing Climate Change

Many, many thanks to Solomon Lindenberg for his column discussing Greta Thunberg (“Greta Thunberg Isn’t Just an Activist – She’s a Role Model,” Jan. 17, 2020). His ardent defense of Thunberg’s importance in climate advocacy and his own clear grasp of the climate crisis that is upon us are valuable contributions to our public conversation. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Fair Maps: One Chance Per Decade to Get Them Right

Here’s the thing about fair maps: We have only one chance in a decade to do it right. The 2020 census and redistricting are just around the corner. We have to act now to make sure there are fair voting maps for fair elections in Wisconsin for the next 10 years. A majority of citizens, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Support the Clean Water Task Force’s Recommendations

Make one short phone call, or write one email to contact your Kewaunee County Board supervisor to ask him/her to vote for resolutions supporting the state’s Clean Water Task Force bills and recommendations. Our two state legislators sat on the task force. The upcoming spring may again be messy, wet and late, and numerous liquid-manure […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Welcoming UW-Madison Nursing Students

Thank you to the Door County community from Door County Medical Center, the Department of Public Health, Sunshine House, the ADRC, Ascension Home Health, Scandia Village, the Northern Door Child Care Center, Door County EMS in Sister Bay and Washington Island, and the WICHP program for providing an excellent glimpse into rural community health for […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Message Sent to Senator Ron Johnson on Jan. 24

Hey, Ron,   I know the Senate hearings are pure torture for all you guys, but I hope you can take a moment to check out a new website that popped up a couple days ago, created and funded by Republicans whom I (and hopefully you) respect. Here’s the link: presidentpence.com.   And here’s a quote from […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Who Gets Something for Free?

From a Wyoming coal miner in the USA Today/Green Bay Press-Gazette on Jan 24, I quote, “… something wrong in their [Democrats’] heads to think you can [have] everything for free.” Where are most Democrats? New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, Oregon, Washington (and Wisconsin). These states have the highest income, inheritance, sales and property […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Senate Republicans Must Step Up

The Mar-a-Lago misfit has played his empty hand again. By ignoring the advice of cooler heads and bypassing Congress on his plan to assassinate a general of a country we are not at war with invites retaliation. He disregards international rules of conduct to service his ego, not his country. Because of the inflamed situation, […]

  • Letter to the Editor: We All Can Be Gretas

Last week in the Green section, a Gibraltar senior, Solomon Lindenberg, wrote an article about environmental issues that I highly recommend everyone read. It encourages me to see more and more young people seeing a problem, whether it’s gun control or our environment; making a statement; and forcing us as adults to really think and then […]

  • Letter to the Editor: The Time Is Now; the Choice Is Crucial

Next week we may see the start of an impeachment trial in the Senate. I’m concerned by the unwillingness of Republicans in positions of authority to rein in this president – even though we have a transcript of a phone call in which he clearly asks a foreign government for a favor that is forbidden by […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Socialism: ‘Use Your Common Sense!’

Responding to a letter stating how socialism is terrific and that Democrats aren’t promoting socialism. Really? There are many socialists in the Democratic Party. Where they used to deny it, now they openly embrace it. Now the Democratic Party has come out openly pursuing socialist policies that originally Democratic leaders tried to deny, claiming it […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Thanks for Supporting the 2019 Red Kettle Campaign

A big thank-you to all the volunteers and donors who supported the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign for 2019!  The stores that hosted ringers at their front doors are truly appreciated: Main Street Market, EconoFoods, Pick ’n Save, Walgreens, Walmart and several in Northern Door. Many ringers braved the weather and gave much of their […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Just Silly

The two-year drawdown of the Forestville Millpond dam has been a contentious project. Widely opposed by local residents, but initiated nonetheless by the Door County Commission, it has generated two recall petitions, acrimonious debate at committee and commission meetings, and now baseless accusations pitting local citizens against county authority. This is just silly. A December […]

  • Letter to the Editor: War and Peace

Standing for peace is not disrespecting anyone’s appreciation for those who serve to protect us; however, we are what we eat. Our appetite for military conflict as a tool for resolution of disagreements, the bullying threat of American military intervention, and our smart bombs delivered by smart drones overwhelm our palate for peace. Football-game pageantry […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Both Parties Advocate for Endless Wars’

Amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, Democrats are quick to call President Trump a war criminal and a threat to our national security. While the criticism is well warranted – the assassination of Iran’s top general, Qasem Soleimani, likely violated international law, and his death will undoubtedly result in retaliation – it comes off […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Stakeholders: Piercing the Heart of Democracy

Regular people, laborers and the small-business-class electorate no longer have much of a voice in the democratic process. We have been prevented and discouraged through various diabolically engineered efforts (e.g., GOP-initiated voter suppression and GOP gerrymandering), and we are relegated to the anonymously defined “workforce,” barely qualifying as democratic stakeholders lately or even considered as […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Let’s See More Facts and No Bullying Speech

One consistent tactic used when criticized is “whataboutism.” When people do something harmful, they point a finger at someone else to avoid responding to the concern. Is it OK to lie, cheat or steal because other people do? Whataboutism, also known as whataboutery, is not new. However, whataboutism is a word being watched by Merriam-Webster. […]

  • Letter to the Editor: Northern Manure

Door County might as well be advertising in Kewaunee County. My county has manure-spreading restrictions starting Jan. 1 through April 15. Does Door? What this means is the semi tanker trucks are heading north! Your county board is the problem. Make them enact the same restrictions as Kewaunee, or dig a deeper well!  The citizens […]

  • Letter to the Editor: ‘Brain-Damaged’?

Regarding the letter “Fact-Checking Reader’s Letter” in your Jan. 3-10 issue, I was looking forward to some interesting insights, only to find the very first sentence referring to those with opinions different from the writer’s as being “brain-damaged.” Starting an argument by insulting everyone who disagrees with you is just not an effective way to […]
