Causes to Celebrate

Golfers were clad in pink once again for the annual Pink Classic Golf Tournament on May 31, 2015 at Horseshoe Bay Golf Club. The fundraiser will enable the organization to continue to give scholarships. The luncheon and silent auction made $1,400. A weekend of golf honoring the late Ed Strege was filled with great turnout and weather as 140 golfers descended on Peninsula State Park Golf Course on Sept. 27, 2015, for the second annual Little Eddie Big Cup. The event, along with the Little Eddie Little Cup at Red Putter Mini Golf, raised $17,000 for the Ed Strege Family Memorial Fund, along with the newly created Mental Health Awareness Fund. The Door County Maritime Museum’s 2014-2015 wooden boatbuilding class constructed a Stickleback Dory. The boat was taken to numerous county festivals and events, and many raffle tickets were collected. The eventual winner of the Stickleback Dory was Dr. John Dovrary. Submitted.

The Sunrise School Ambassadors, a group chosen by their teachers to be goodwill ambassadors and volunteers in our community, visited the Sunshine House Sheltered Workshop. The group made Easter decorations with the employees and then took an informative tour of the facility. Submitted.

Belgian booyah and bread was served at the Belgian Heritage Center in Brussels for a gathering on April 26, 2015, to benefit the Belgian Heritage Center in its mission to preserve and promote the area’s unique culture, history and architecture. Submitted.

In less than a full eight-hour workday, close to 200 volunteers built a new, 2,500-square-foot playground at Peterson Park next to the YMCA in Sturgeon Bay on June 6, 2015. The playground was designed and the construction coordinated by the nonprofit group KaBOOM! Primary funding for the playground was provided through a gift from Baylake Bank. On Oct. 20, 2015, the Door County YMCA and the Parish Nurse Network hosted a free Community Healthy Living Fair at the Sturgeon Bay Program Center. More than 300 community members were in attendance and learned about the programs and services of nearly 60 area businesses. Submitted.

From Sept. 11 – 13, 2015, the K. Allen Gallery in Sister Bay hosted The Great Glass Escape, an all-glass event of exhibitions and demos, to raise money for Mind Music, a fundraiser that will bring musicians and other music programs to Scandia Village for the benefit of individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The Hardy Gallery was honored to have partnered with Peninsula Preschool in Ephraim for their Art from the Heart Partnership, raising almost $2,000 for the preschool during the annual fundraising raffle drawing of an original work of art by Bonnie Paruch. This year’s fundraiser was the most successful to date; selling more than 2,500 tickets throughout the season and producing revenue of more than $8,000. Sophia Pollman, Miss Lakeshore’s Outstanding Teen 2015 and Sevastopol High School student, coordinated the Jackets of Joy campaign to collect jackets for Door County children.
