Celebrating National Poetry Month

April is National Poetry Month – a time to introduce more poetry into your daily life, appreciate the known and lesser-known poets, and take up the pen yourself! Founded by the Academy of American Poets in 1996, there are plenty of creative ways to celebrate this monumental month.

• Select a favorite poem and share it will coworkers, family, and friends.

• Memorize a poem and recite it to yourself while driving, walking, or cooking.

• Revisit a classic you may not have appreciated in your schooldays – see what it means to you now.

• Surround yourself with poetry – post a poem on the fridge, chalk a poem on the sidewalk, or include a poem in your lunchbox.

• Attend a poetry reading. (The UUF hosts poetry readings the second Wednesday of every month.)

• Write your own poetry and submit it to Peninsula Pulse. (Email [email protected].)

In honor of National Poetry Month, this issue features a selection of poems highlighting various subjects and forms. Poetry is for everyone, to appreciate, to write, to enjoy.

“For what is a poem but a hazardous attempt at self-understanding: it is the deepest part of autobiography.”~ Robert Penn Warren
