Celebrating the Week of the Young Child

The Barker YMCA Child Development Center and Northern Door Children’s Center are celebrating the Week of the Young Child, April 7 – 11.

The Barker Center teachers are asking parents and families to be involved in a hands-on way to help advocate the celebration of young children. The YMCA Barker Child Development center has designated a center-wide theme for the week, “Colors of the Rainbow.” They are asking each room to create a family project relating to this theme. These projects will be on display throughout the center during the Week of the Young Child.

Each year during this week, Northern Door Children’s Center in Sister Bay highlights different aspects of outstanding early literature and the importance of early literacy experiences for even the youngest of children. This year the Children’s Center has chosen the theme “Celebrating Generations.” Every classroom, from infants through 4K, will focus on literature and lesson plans that explore grandparent and grandchildren relationships. Some of the activities planned for the week include: a visit from Kay Bidwell Loberg, local author of Growing Up Harley, visiting grandparents coming to read books and bring special activities for the students, a gently used book exchange and collaborative activities between NDCC students and Scandia Village residents. At the traditional Literacy Breakfast on April 9, students with their parents and grandparents will participate in an art project, have the chance to win door prizes, and enter a raffle for a copy of Growing Up Harley, donated by Dancing Bear of Sturgeon Bay.
