Celebrating Winter 2010: Snowflake Style!

This year’s February calendar on Washington Island is filled with events to take the chill out of the days and put fun, friends and food into winter with old favorites and some new twists. Come on up to the island to help Celebrate Winter 2010: Snowflake Style!

Starting Saturday, February 6, anglers will be hoping to make that prize wining catch for the Lion’s Club Fish Derby, which continues through Sunday, February 14. Check with the Lion’s Club for the Derby contest rules.

The Ice/Snow Sculpture Contest is back by request! Chisel it, scoop it, pack it, color it and present your creation to the masses! Register the location of your creation with Kim Hansen (920.847.9901) or Mary Andersen (920.847.2191). Voting ballots will be available at Mann’s Store, Hansen’s BP Amoco, Mann’s Mercantile and the Red Cup Coffee Shop.

For those who are handier with a camera than a fishing pole or an ice pick, grab your favorite photos and enter the Island Photo Contest. Participants can choose one or all of the subject categories in this year’s contest: Landscape/Scenery, People or Wildlife (limit two photos per category per person please). Sign up at the Ferry Office where entries will be displayed all week. Cash prizes to be awarded for each category at Nelsen’s Hall on Sunday February 14. Contact Kim Hansen (920.847.29901) or Mary Andersen (920.847.2191) for more information.

On Friday, February 12, Bethel Builders will host their annual Ableskievers Dinner at Bethel Church from 5 – 7 pm. Everyone is welcome to come out, warm up and enjoy this tasty meal. Visit with old friends, make some new ones and have a great time!

Then on Saturday, February 13, it’s time to get that slow cooker ready and break out that special blend of spices and ingredients for the Chamber’s Annual Chili Cook Off! This year’s event is hosted by KK Fiske/The Granary from 11:30 am – 1:30 pm. Cash prize awards! And a live band on Saturday evening February 13th!

New to the festivities this year, a succulent roasted pig dinner with all the trimmings will take place on Saturday, February 13 at Karly’s Bar & Cellar Restaurant starting at 5 pm. Everyone is encouraged to come, enjoy and a perfect meal for the end of a perfect Island day!

The celebrations will come to a close on Sunday, February 14 when the Lions Club Lunch and Bingo at Nelsen’s Hall wraps up the Fish Derby.

Everyone is welcome. Please come out and show your support for the Washington Island Chamber businesses. For more information, call 920.847.9901 or 920.847.2191.
