Sevastopol Historical Society presents “Cherries! Cherries! Cherries!” on Aug. 1 at 7 pm at the Sevastopol Town Hall. There was a time when Door County ruled the nation when it came to the small red fruit. The soil on the northern part of the peninsula was not great for farming, but early settler Joseph Zettel introduced the first orchard trees and found that the climate and conditions were perfect for apples, plums and cherries.
Join the historical society for an educational and entertaining video on Door County’s cherry industry, plus answers to questions from local historians and orchard growers.
Want to test your baking skills? Bring and enter your favorite cherry pie in the contest. Prizes will be awarded. Cherry pie with ice cream will also be served. For more information call Linda Wait at 920.743.6884.
