Cherryland Airport Seeks Improvements

A public hearing before the Door County Airport & Parks Committee was held on June 18 at Cherryland Airport to consider petitioning the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for state and/or federal aid for development at the airport.

Airport Manager Keith Kasbohm outlined the items, which include:

• Reconstruct apron pavements and hangar taxiways. Kasbohm said three sections are up for consideration and the pavements are 16, 24 and 26 years old.

• Snow removal equipment building:  Kasbohm said the building is from the early 1980s and has many issues, including – exterior metal siding is deteriorating due to a chemical reaction with the fire treating used in the lumber; inadequate insulation (he said it cost $700 to heat the 2,800-square-foot building during the coldest month of the winter); inadequate floor drains; lack of space. The proposal is to construct a 60’x80’ foot building, but that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) determines the fundable size based on the size of the airport.

• LED lighting in the parking lot:  To replace the dusk-to-dawn high-pressure sodium lights.

• Conduct wildlife hazard assessment.

• Clear and maintain approaches:  This is a high priority with the FAA and the state Bureau of Aeronautics.

The request was approved by the Door County Board at its June 24 meeting and now will be forwarded to the state Bureau of Aeronautics for review. Kasbohm estimated it would be six months before the county hears back on the petition.
