Wence and Sandra Martinez of Martinez Studio in Jacksonport recently had an opening reception at Green Home Chicago Design Center in the West Loop for “Martinez Studio: Modern Flatweave/Primitive Painting.” The show includes representative works in both painting and weaving on view for the winter and beyond.

For the first time “Hawks Veil,” their 9’x12′ weaving, was hanging on warehouse walls – even though the last four inches trailed on the floor. The scale of the tactile hand-spun wool work done in all un-dyed natural colors was astounding. Photos of the same work will be in the next American Craft Magazine as part of an article on Dia de los Muertos along with their first editorial mention in the craft magazine, on stands Sept. 25. Their inclusion was the result of the curator of the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago’s strong recommendation.

Next up for Sandra and Wence Martinez are their fall shows in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia in October and November. Visit the studio in Jacksonport or Green Home Chicago Design Center before the works go on the east coast tour. The studio, located one mile south of Jacksonport on Highway 57, is open 11 am – 4 pm and closed Tuesdays. For more information call 920.823.2154 or MartinezStudio.com.
