Children’s Book Donated to the Wellness Center of Door County

Judy Juadis, past president of Altrusa, gives the books to Kathy Tellstrom, coordinator of the YAPS (Young Adult Parent Support) program and weekly playgroups at the Wellness Center of Door County.

The Wellness Center of Door County received a donation of $300 worth of children’s books from Altrusa of Door County, a charitable organization whose mission is “advancing literacy through opportunities.”

The Wellness Center recently adopted the “Read to Me” initiative, which encourages parents to develop pre-literacy skills in children by reading to their babies and toddlers.

“It’s wonderful that Altrusa is helping us get books in the hands of these families,” says Kathy Tellstrom, coordinator of the YAPS (Young Adult Parent Support) program and weekly playgroups. “Building a library of books in the home is so important to develop the love of reading in young children.”

The books will be given to parents who participate in the weekly playgroups sponsored by the Wellness Center, as well as expectant mothers who participate in the Best Beginnings Program, a pre-natal care coordination program that supports mothers through education and emotional support. Playgroups are held every Monday from 10:30 – 11:30 am at the Moravian Church in Sturgeon Bay, and are free and open to all.

Altrusa also donated additional Spanish language books.
