Chocolate and Candy Making Classes

La Maison du Chocolat, the Parisian chocolate shop that served as inspiration for the Savory Spoon’s Sweet Spot.

“The Sweet Spot” is ready for your enjoyment at the Savory Spoon Cooking School in Ellison Bay. Satisfy your sweet tooth this season with homemade chocolates made by in-house chocolatier, Kathy (Cocoa) McCarthy. Made with rich, couverture Belgian chocolate, the Savory Spoon’s specialties include Caramel Turtles, Drunken Turtles, Almond Toffee, Decadent Truffles, and new for this season Biker Bars and an addictive Peanut Butter Crunch.

This spring, McCarthy and Janice Thomas, owner of the Savory Spoon, teamed up to “take on Paris” for a little chocolate tasting. They explored some of the finest chocolate boutiques in Paris and tasted some very fine delights. This experience has the kitchen at the Savory Spoon stirring up great ideas for future chocolate sensations.

The school will host two chocolate making classes this season:

• Truffles Galore, Saturday, July 5, 9:30 am – noon.

This chocolate class will be taught by McCarthy, who will educate participants on gourmet chocolate making and techniques. This class is the perfect combination of chocolate and chocolate.

The class will include the art of classic truffle making using couverture Belgian chocolate. The twist will be creating one’s own one-of-a-kind decadent truffles using a praline crunch, seasonal fruit or liqueur. Take some home, too.

• Caramel…From Classic To Extraordinary, Saturday, August 2, 9:30 am – noon.

Love sweet and chewy? Then you will love this beginner’s candy-making class, where McCarthy will teach techniques of gourmet caramel-making and the wide variety of sweet treats that can be created including turtles, a caramel pecan log with homemade nougat, plus a delicious caramel sauce for all types of desserts.
