CHRIS AND LIZ HECHT NAMED SISTER BAY VOLUNTEERS OF THE YEAR

The Sister Bay Advancement Association (SBAA) has awarded the 2021 Sister Bay Volunteer of the Year award to Chris and Liz Hecht.

For 20 years, Chris Hecht has been chief of the Sister Bay/Liberty Grove Fire Department and is president of the Door County Fire Chiefs Association. He led the fire chiefs to join forces with other local entities to create the Door County Emergency Support Coalition, a resource that has provided information and assistance to the residents and guests of Door County throughout the COVID-19 outbreak

The coalition’s assistance includes shopping for and delivering food and supplies, helping to check on the welfare of family and neighbors, and assisting the Door County Public Health Department with vaccination clinics and volunteer staffing at COVID-19 testing sites.

“None of what I do at the Emergency Support Coalition or any other community project would be possible without the partnership of my wife, Liz,” Chris said.

Liz Hecht, the office manager at Northern Door Communications in Sister Bay, played an integral role in developing the online process for requesting assistance from the coalition and has been involved with programs to help local families in need for several years.

They have two children, Matt and Helen, and have lived in Sister Bay for 31 years

To honor their service to Sister Bay and the broader community, Chris and Liz Hecht will ride as the parade marshals in the 75th Fall Festival parade Saturday, Oct. 16, 11 am. The SBAA will make a contribution in their name to the charity of their choice.
