Christmas Bird Count Dec. 17

The Ridges Sanctuary’s citizen scientists are gearing up for the Dec. 17 Christmas Bird Count – specifically, the Ephraim Circle bird count, which is about 15 miles in diameter, with a center at approximately the intersection of County A and Peninsula Players Road.

This annual program is open to anyone who wishes to look for and count the birds seen on that day, either in the field or at their home bird feeders. The data from the species recorded and the numbers of birds seen during a given time period is analyzed to assess the health of bird populations, help guide conservation actions and identify environmental issues.

There is no need to be an expert birder or brave the elements to participate because many Christmas birders tally species observed at their bird feeders from inside their homes. Others travel afield, searching inside the 15-mile diameter of shorelines, roadsides and forests of the Ephraim Circle.
