Christmas Bird Count

The Annual Christmas Bird Count for Sturgeon Bay is scheduled for Dec. 15, and Crossroads at Big Creek will participate. The community is invited to join in its efforts.

To kick off the bird count, Crossroads will host “Know the Winter Birds” on Dec. 14 at 2 pm. This presentation is for beginners or those who want a quick review of the winter birds of Door County. Slides and short videos will help learners identify the birds likely to be in Door County this month.

The actual count starts Dec. 15 at Crossroads. At 9:30 am or 1 pm, birding groups will leave the Collins Learning Center to explore the Big Creek Preserve. At 3 pm, a group will explore The Cove Preserve. Counters will meet at the Big Creek bridge on Utah Street. Participants are welcome to join in or drop out at any time. Those who would like to stay warm and participate in the Feeder Count at the Collins Learning Center should come at 9:30 or 1 pm. Crossroads will provide hot beverages for warm-up breaks. At noon, folks are welcome to eat their bag lunches and watch birds at the feeding stations just outside the expansive windows of the Learning Center. Pre-registration is not required, and loaner binoculars will be available. Dress for the weather.

Crossroads at Big Creek is a donor-supported learning center composed of three preserves. The Collins Learning Center, located at 2041 Michigan Street in Sturgeon Bay, is open 2-4:30 pm daily and during scheduled activities. Trails and restrooms are always open. All activities are free and open to the public.
