Classes at Bjorklunden

From August 8 – 13, Lawrence University’s Björklunden in Baileys Harbor is offer offering two seminars: “Reading the Ridges: Lorine Niedecker and the Natural Worlds of Wisconsin” and “Angels, Bird-Droppings & Fish Liver: The Book of Tobit.”

 

 

Participants of “Reading the Ridges” seminar will explore the work of Wisconsin poet Lorine Niedecker, who wrote about her island home in southern Wisconsin as well as the Ridges Sanctuary in Door County. The seminar will be lead by Faith Barrett, an associate professor of English at Lawrence University, Karl Gartung, co-founder of Woodland Pattern Book Center in Milwaukee, and Jenny Penberthy, a professor of English at Capilano University in Vancouver.

 

 

Participants of “Angels, Bird-Droppings & Fish Liver” will use the Book of Tobit as their guide while discussing topics such as the popularity and significance of belief in angels and demons, ideas of divine sovereignty and predestination, and common religious practices such as prayer, blessing, and acts of charity. Attendees need to bring a Bible that includes the Apocryphal or Deuterocanonical books. Leading the seminar is Bill Urbrock, a professor emeritus of religious studies at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh.
