Classes at Bjorklunden

From Aug. 15 – 20 Lawrence University’s Bjِrklunden in Baileys Harbor is offering the following seminars: “The United States and the Cold War, 1957-72,” “Prize-winning French Films: Envelope, Please!” and “Beauty Will Save the World: Dostoevsky’s ‘The Idiot.’”

In “The United States and the Cold War,” participants will review the Cold War from 1957 to 1972, paying particular attention to the foreign and domestic policy of the presidential administrations of Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon. Teaching the course is Tim Crain, who holds a Ph.D. in modern European and modern Jewish history from Arizona State University.

Instructors Eilene Hoft-March and Judy Holland Sarnecki, both professors of French at Lawrence University, will teach “Prize-winning French Films.” The class will feature five award-winning films. Three have won the César (the French equivalent of the Oscar) for best film; two have received the Palme d’Or for best feature film or documentary at the prestigious Cannes festival.

Peter Thomas, assistant professor of Russian at Lawrence University, will teach “Beauty Will Save the World: Dostoevsky’s ‘The Idiot.’” Participants of the class will read Fyodor Dostoevsky’s “The Idiot” and discuss the novel’s formal peculiarities, its connection to contemporary events in 1860s Russia, its place in Dostoevsky’s biography, and its importance for Russian culture today.
