Clay on Steele Offers Homeschool Program

Ellen Barlas watches her daughter Jacqueline throw on the wheel.

Homeschoolers from Kewaunee, Door and Brown County can enjoy an ongoing educational experience with clay at Algoma’s community clay studio – Clay on Steele. For the winter/early spring classes, children received excellent instruction from Keith Carter, the resident potter, and help from Kirsten Christianson. The classes emphasized wheel throwing and hand building.

Children and parents learned to make a coil pot after seeing photos and a presentation on Navajo pottery. They also learned slab building, tile making and different techniques of glazing. The last day ended at Barnsite Gallery in Kewaunee where Keith discussed his latest work.
