Clipper, Eagle, Viking girls 1-2-3 in Packerland track meet

Door County girls track and field teams claimed the top-three spots at Monday’s Packerland Conference meet hosted by Southern Door High School.

Sturgeon Bay won the conference title with 143 points, followed by Southern Door (123) and Gibraltar (83) in the nine-team meet. The Vikings edged out Kewaunee by a point to get into the top three.

The county’s other mainland high school, Sevastopol, came in seventh with 51.5 points.

Points in each of the 18 events were awarded for the top-eight places, ranging from 10 points for finishing first to a point for coming in eighth. 

The Clippers won six events, with Hannah Sternard placing first in both the long jump (15 feet, 1/2 inch) and triple jump (30-10); Cate Anderson winning the 100-meter hurdles (16.49 seconds) and 300 hurdles (49.67); Andrea Wilke placing first the pole vault (8-0); and Anderson and Sternard joining Jade Tomberlin and Mallory Barker in winning the 4×400 relay (4:30.17).

The Eagles’ Brooke Strege was also a double conference champion in the 800 (2:37.55) and 3,200 (12:09.66) runs and added a runner-up finish in the 1,600 run (5:35.59). 

Southern Door’s Bethany Paye, Paige Olson, Danica Neville and Charlotte Collet-Letailleur won the 4×100 relay (54.88).

The Vikings’ only individual conference champion was Nida Zukauskaite, who placed first in the high jump after she was the only girl to clear 5 feet.

The Pioneer girls had a pair of conference champions with Kylee Duessler winning the 100 dash (13.33) and Bea Dramm passing up Strege to win the 1,600 run (5:28.85).

Kewaunee boys first

In the boys competition, Kewaunee, which recorded the top conference finish in 11 of 18 events, literally ran away with the Packerland championship with 212 points. Southern Door was a distant second at 116 and Peshtigo rounded out the top three with 114.

Sturgeon Bay and Gibraltar finished fourth and fifth with 75 and 57 points, respectively. Sevastopol finished ninth with 11 points.

The Eagles had two individual conference champions. Eli Mancheski won the high jump (5-8). Brodie Overbeck recorded the longest throw in the discus (136-5) and came in second in the shot put (44-2.5).

Regionals up next

The county’s boys and girls track and field teams begin their quest for state titles Monday, May 23. Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay will compete in the Division 2 Regional at Wrightstown, while Gibraltar and Sevastopol are in the Division 3 Regional at Hilbert.

Sectionals are May 26 at Little Chute in Division 2 and at Rosholt in Division 3, with this year’s state meet set for June 3-4 at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.
