Clipper Skiers, Snowboarders at Mt. Ashwabay

Sturgeon Bay’s ski and snowboard team headed to northwest Wisconsin to compete Tuesday in a Northern Conference event at Mt. Ashwabay in Bayfield County.

Clippers junior Tristan Brilla, who competed in his first action of the season this year, finished second among all snowboarders, picking up where he left off last year as a state qualifier.

Brilla – who competed in the boardercross, slalom and giant slalom –  had the second-fastest times in all three events.

In the skiing events, junior captain Tori Alger led the Lady Clippers to a fourth-place team finish ahead of their conference rivals, Rhinelander.

Alger placed 14th overall in the meet, and every girl on the team improved from Sturgeon Bay’s first meet Jan. 10 at Snowriver.

Freshmen Jordis Brilla and June Van Lieshout improved their times by 21% and 17%, respectively. Junior Julia Gregory and senior Lilly Cihlar also posted improved times, while junior Maddie Propsom competed in her first racing event of the season.

On the boys side, junior Ben Stephens posted the Clippers’ best times in his first racing action of the season, finishing 21st overall in the meet.

Junior captain Xavier Jandrin and freshman Levi Ullman also posted improved times over their first meet two weeks earlier.

The Clippers will compete closer to home for the next conference event being held Feb. 2 at Granite Peak in Wausau.
