Coast Guard Honored at Eagle Bluff Lighthouse

Honoring the dedication of Henry Stanley, William Duclon and Peter Coughlin, the keepers who manned Eagle Bluff Lighthouse from 1868 to 1926, members of the United States Coast Guard Station Two Rivers will raise a replica of the original U.S. Lighthouse Service pennant on Sept. 27. The Northern Door County Boy Scouts Troop 1120, under the leadership of Terry Zielke, will serve as honor guard. The public is welcome to attend this special event at 1 pm.

“In raising the official pennant that first flew over the lighthouses in 1869, we are honoring the men and women who served – and continue to serve – as the guardians of our American water boundaries. We hope everyone will come out and show their patriotic colors,” said Patti Podgers, Eagle Bluff Lighthouse curator. “Following the initial flag rising, the historic pennant will continue to fly every day the lighthouse is open.”

Celebrating the traditions of the turn of the 20th century, crafters will be on hand to demonstrate knitting and quilting, and musicians will perform tunes of the day. From 1 – 4 pm, children touring the lighthouse will be admitted free of charge if accompanied by an adult.

“The icing on the cake that day will be the unveiling of our new pavers project. Based on a plan drawn up by the state landscape architect, visitors will be able to purchase a brick which can be engraved to celebrate a special occasion or possibly their first visit to Door County. The purchase of a brick will support the continued maintenance of the lighthouse and grounds,” Podgers said. “The pavers will also provide a new level area on the lighthouse grounds for visitors. This is something we have been planning for the past two years.”

Parking is limited and carpooling is recommended. In addition to parking at the lighthouse, ample space is available at Nicolet Beach. Eagle Bluff Lighthouse is located in Peninsula State Park on Shore Road. A park pass is required for entry. For more information visit eagleblufflighthouse.org or call 920.421.3636.
