Community Building = Building Community

The idea of building community through philanthropy is the focus of this year’s edition of Philanthropy. We decided to do that through the eyes of organizations that have required the benevolence of the community to exist.

We take a historic look at what it took to build a church at the turn of the 20th century, as well as the efforts it took to fill the childcare gap in northern Door County with the Northern Door Children’s Center. We also take a look at the dedicated volunteers who expand time and energy for restoration work on outlying islands around the peninsula and see the public respond with monetary assistance to one of the county’s newest nonprofits – the Open Door Bird Sanctuary.

These stories are, of course, just a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes philanthropy that takes place every day to maintain the many organizations and entities that do so much to help us enjoy our time on this peninsula.
