Community Presentation on Suicide Prevention Details QPR Response

On June 27, 6-7 pm, Bay View Lutheran Church in Sturgeon Bay will host a community presentation on suicide prevention and QPR (Question, Persuade, Refer). Public Health nurses Sue Powers and Katie Van Laanen, certified QPR trainers, will instruct people on QPR – an emergency response to someone in crisis.

Suicide occurs among all groups of people. No age, race, or socioeconomic class is immune. The suicide rate in Wisconsin is four times the homicide rate. Each year, more than 700 Wisconsin residents die by suicide. In addition, approximately 5,500 Wisconsin residents are hospitalized due to intentional, self-inflicted injury. Across the US, suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people ages 15-24.

Suicide exacts an incalculable toll on family, friends, and loved ones. Though the burden of suicide in Wisconsin is great, hope lies in the fact that suicide is preventable. Everyone should be trained. Intended audience for this training is adults or older teens accompanied by a responsible adult.
