The Door County Service Club Coalition is offering its last round of youth mini-grants for the 2013-2014 school year. This round of grants often supports activities that occur late in the school year or during the summer months.

Altrusa Club Receives Grant at United Way Annual Meeting
Altrusa Club of Door County sent two members to the United Way annual meeting and community reception, held April 3 at the Lodge at Leathem Smith. Altrusa was awarded a United Way grant of $4,400 for the 2014 Back-to-School Fair, the club’s largest community service project.

Rummage Sale to Benefit Catholic Youth Mission Trip
The Catholic Life Teen Youth will hold a rummage sale at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 692 Tacoma Beach Road (just off Highway 42/57) on April 11 from 5 – 7 pm and Saturday from 8 am – 2 pm.

Lakeshore CAP Hosts First Annual “Helpful Hearts” Dinner
Lakeshore CAP is hosting a first annual “Helpful Hearts” Volunteer Appreciation Dinner on April 24 at the Holiday Inn in Manitowoc from 5:30 – 9 pm. Out of 150 nominees, 50 finalists will attend the event, and six will receive a $500 check to give to the nonprofit or charitable service organization of their choice.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) and it makes me pause and think about all of the “unheard voices” of sexual assault. It has been said that one out of four females is sexually assaulted before she turns 18 and one out of six males is sexually assaulted before he turns 18.

Polydactyl Jewel is proud of her extra toes, and happily shows them off to all who visit her. A polydactyl cat has a congenital physical anomaly, a type of cat body-type genetic mutation that causes the cat to be born with more than the usual number of toes on one or more of its paws.

Celebrating the Week of the Young Child
The Barker YMCA Child Development Center and Northern Door Children’s Center are celebrating the Week of the Young Child, April 7 – 11. The Barker Center teachers are asking parents and families to be involved in a hands-on way to help advocate the celebration of young children.
