Concert Aims to Raise the Roof

Southern Door Community Auditorium will host a benefit concert on March 13, 2010 at 7:30 pm featuring the Oak Street Boys Barbershop Quartet and Four the Cross. The proceeds from the concert will go toward the restoration of the Waniger Schoolhouse, which was recently relocated to the Southern Door School property.

The “Raising the Roof” concert promises to be a most entertaining evening. A characterization of Theresa Waniger, the first teacher at the schoolhouse in 1886, will join the boys to present a fun evening of music tied in with an old schoolhouse theme. One never knows what to expect from the Oak Street Boys of Sturgeon Bay, and the upbeat quartet Four the Cross from Green Bay specializes in Southern Gospel music, providing a knee slapping, body rocking, good time.

General admission is $10, and tickets are available at Baylake Bank in Brussels, Greisen’s Appliance Center in Sturgeon Bay, and online at http://www.southerndoorauditorium.org.

All proceeds will benefit the second stage of the historic restoration of the Waniger Schoolhouse and will help to put a new roof on the schoolhouse come spring. The Southern Door School Archives committee was recently gifted the one room schoolhouse from the Randy and Bobbi Jo Weckler family. The schoolhouse, which dates back to 1886, was moved to the Southern Door School property this past summer, and the committee plans to restore it as accurately as possible, turning it into a living museum for the children of Door County.

Any contributions to this worthy cause will be greatly appreciated. Checks can be made to: Southern Door School / Waniger School Project, and can be sent to Southern Door School, 2073 County Trunk DK, Brussels, WI 54204. All donations are tax deductible.
