Ephraim Road Construction Could Start March 11

The snow may be piled high, but the reconstruction of Highway 42 in Ephraim will be starting soon.

Village officials will meet with contractors March 1 to get an update on when work will begin. Village Administrator Brent Bristol said indications are that the hard closure of the highway won’t start until at least March 11. Preparation for detour signage, however, could begin next week.

Once work begins, the project stretching from the south end of the Ephraim Public Beach to the north end of the Fire House Museum will create significant traffic challenges for local residents and visitors from March through June.

During stage one of construction – which runs through May 24, including weekends – Highway 42 will be closed to through traffic. Business and resident access within the construction area will be maintained at all times.

The official Highway 42 detour created by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) will seem ridiculous to locals. Northbound traffic will be detoured at County A south of Ephraim, then routed to County EE to County F to Highway 57 in the middle of Baileys Harbor. From there, vehicles will be directed north to Sister Bay.

That out-of-the-way detour is mandated by the DOT for heavy truck traffic. Local traffic will be able to get around the detour by using Ephraim’s back roads.
